The check box trick allows for a label anywhere on the page to activate an input somewhere else on the page. This checkbox input can then activate the css of following elements with it's :checked pseudo state.
This example lives by itself, and won't work perfectly for you without some adjustment to placement and design. But the concept is what you should get from this example.
